1905The first Mass at Sacred Heart was celebrated on Newton Street. Construction of a new church began at 14th and Park Road which became the Tivoli Theater.
1905 The Academy of the Sacred Heart which was served by the Dominican Sisters was founded. It was the first highschool in the district to serve non-Catholics and Catholics.
1921 The cornerstone for the present church was laid.
1922 The new structure was dedicated by Bishop Michael Curley.
1930 Msgr. Gavan, pastor of Sacred Heart founded the Sacred Heart Elementary School.
1953 Archbishop O’Boyle celebrated the first Labor Day Mass at Sacred Heart which became a yearly custom until 1994 when the Archdiocese transferred the Mass to the Basilica.
1974 The Sacred Heart Academy closed
1984 The Capuchin friars of the St. Augustine province became the guardians of Sacred Heart. Present Day The Shrine of the Sacred Heart continues its mission to welcomeall, its work in various ministries, and being an oasis of prayer.
